MAKING RENEWABLE ENERGY ACCESSIBLE IN TOGO - A CASE STUDY

At Sunmaster, taking concrete action by creating sustainable solutions is an effective move to revolutionise energy consumption across the Globe.

Our mission is to implement an efficient and reliable solar energy infrastructure, providing abundant electricity supply while cutting off the expenses.

In this case, our supply granted  acceptable life conditions to thousands of people in Togo, Africa, thanks to a collaboration with UNDP (United Nation Development Program).

INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT OUTLINE

The Togolese community is still struggling to get a proper electricity distribution and territorial presence,  with an electricity access rate of 52%, although progress has been made during the past 20 years.

According to TrackingSDG7:

Furthermore, the Renewable Energy Act established the general legal framework for the implementation of electricity generation projects based on renewable energy sources, both for own consumption or for commercialization.

The UNDP has set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a “universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity”.

The high and over-the-year constant solar radiation results in a high value of available solar energy, reaching its maximum in the northern areas with a value of 2045 kWh/m² per year.

This is why solar energy resulted in being an excellent solution for bringing electricity supply across the country.

In an effort to balance social, economic and environmental sustainability, SunMaster took part in the UNDP’s renewable energy’s project, thanks to the mediation of an international supplier.

THE UNIT

SunMaster STL08 pole is designed for public illumination and is constituted of 50 W Led panel  with a 170 lm/W enlightenment efficiency and 240Wp solar panel. It has installed an LTE router allowing 4G internet connection with a smart rechargeable battery and 5 USB charger sockets for smartphones.

Each pole produces 12,500 lumens, covering the capacity of a 120~150W HPS grid-tied installation.

PROJECT EXECUTION

Togo is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, with most of the 8 million people concentrated in rural communities, and with the highest density in the south near the Atlantic coast.

Sunmaster achieved the goal of creating a functional, sustainable and long-lasting service within the agreed deadlines, overcoming the lack of resources for creating a sufficient electric infrastructure for Togolese citizens.

10,000 poles were successfully installed across several areas of Togo, set to operate from dusk to dawn.

By using solar energy, Sunmaster enabled cutting edge services for Togo’s community, guaranteeing controllable, public illumination and fast Wifi.

RESULTS AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES

Togo is one of the African Countries that attracts most foreign investments (according to FDIs Foreign Direct Investments in Africa): with this project, the economy will increase and will appeal to even more investors. In fact, implementing public illumination allows business to stay open for more hours a day.

Moreover, the installation of a solar power-driven light source had a substantial impact on Togo Government’s expenses: compared to traditional grid units, SunMaster’s STL08 poles made it possible to save more than 50% in implementation, utility, and maintenance for 10 years.

Somewhere in the rural area of Lomé, a Togolese woman smiles.
She is finally sighing a breath of relief, knowing that her children can come home safely at night.

The UNDP’s and Sunmaster’s supply has put her and thousands of other families at ease as, thanks to the public illumination infrastructure, the number of crimes will decrease and the overall safety improve.
